"On Lomu finally turning down offers from League teams: "Jonah Lomu is staying in New Zealand, ending an is-he-or-isn't-he saga which rivalled the trial of OJ. Simpson for unnecessarily protracted tedium."

Highlanders to recruit general manager

8/09/2010 10:21:05 a.m.

The Highlanders Board has today commenced the recruitment process for the newly created role of General Manager for the Highlanders Super Rugby franchise.

The Board has been considering the optimal structure for the Highlanders as it participates in an expanded Investec Super Rugby from 2011 and has identified the need to establish a small management team that will focus exclusively on the Highlanders’ activities.

The Highlanders’ member Provincial Unions - Rugby Southland, Otago Rugby Football Union (ORFU), North Otago Rugby Union - and the New Zealand Rugby Union, along with other key stakeholders across the region, were all consulted over a period of time and have endorsed the new structure.

The new structure will see the reduction in management services provided by the ORFU and will ultimately also involve the recruitment of a few key positions – a High Performance Manager, Marketing Consultant, and Team Manager - in the Highlanders off-field team.

Highlanders Chairman Ross Laidlaw said: “This will be a small management team that will focus full time on the success of the Highlanders both on and off the field.

“We think this is the best fit for the Highlanders and if we are successful this can only have benefits for the entire region,” he said.

The new General Manager will work closely with all three member Unions.

Until a Highlanders General Manager is appointment, current Highlanders Project Manager Roger Clark will continue to operate in that role, and will be the key Highlanders’ contact alongside Ross Laidlaw.
